The National Obesity Forum has released a report that has got the newspapers talking and nutritionists bickering.
So what has the report said?
- Apparently: ‘eating fat does not make you fat’. We have to agree with this somewhat. Consuming fat will not make you fat…but it can. If you over eat on dietary fat, carbohydrate or protein, it will make you ‘fat’. One thing that needs to be considered: 1 gram of fat contains 9 calories and 1 gram of carbohydrate contains 4 calories. There are more calories in fat. Telling people to suddenly switch over and start consuming a high fat diet may cause some issues as an individual’s overall caloric intake may rise. Not good for someone looking to lose weight.
- This next claim is enough to give Michael a heart attack. “It is highly irrelevant how many calories a portion of food on a plate contains”. Utter madness. We have no idea how they have come to this conclusion. The report also said:
‘People should stop counting calories’. Also ridiculous.
We agree that calories should not be the main focus. Eating food that nourishes your body should always come first. But calories are certainly not ‘irrelevant’ and counting them can be a very effective way to lose weight.
When it comes to nutrition, there’s a lot of confusion and we aren’t surprised. Obesity levels are rising and show no signs of slowing down. When professional bodies that are supposed to be supporting and educating us are disagreeing amongst themselves, what hope do people have? One day it is dietary fat to blame for our expanding waistlines, the next day it is too many carbs. When will the finger stop being pointed at one macronutrient and a balanced approach to nutrition be adopted?
Low carbohydrate diets may work for some and low fat diets may work for others. One approach will not work for everyone. The best diet is the one that you can stick to, so find what works for you and you will feel awesome.
