What motivation?

28 Dec 2016

When you purchase that January gym membership, your motivation is sky high. You picture yourself on the sun lounger sipping Margaritas whilst showing off your new bod in the holiday snaps. But slowly your motivation begins to fade. One missed workout becomes two. Then you haven’t been to the gym in a week. A week becomes a month. Motivation is officially: MIA.

Things didn’t go to plan. Watching TV with a glass of wine has become the evening norm again. Where did things go wrong?

Maintaining our motivation is the biggest challenge we face in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Without consistency, results will never be found. But how can we gain motivation and keep it around for the long run?

Here are a few tips to help keep you on track:

  • Create a positive mindset through daily inspiration. Read blogs, read fitness magazines or listen to podcasts. Even following Instagram pages that pump out motivational quotes can keep you on track. It may sound cheesy but anything that focuses the mind on your goal is a positive in our book.

  • Track your progress. Pictures are our favourite way to track the progress of our clients. Visibly seeing results is the perfect way to spur you on. Use your phone to take a photo of yourself as a starting point. Then retake the photos every couple of weeks. If you feel like skipping a workout, have a look at the photos to see how far you’ve come. They provide a great boost on those days that motivation is low.

  • You are much more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down. Write them down on paper and then write WHY you want to achieve them. Why are they so important to you? Put this piece of paper somewhere visible, somewhere you will see it every day. Make your goals mean something to you and don’t let anything get in your way.

Finally, make sure you enjoy the process. You won’t stick to your plan if you hate the activity. Find a form of exercise you enjoy to keep you coming back for more. Haven’t found an activity you enjoy yet? Then get out there and try something new! Try rock climbing. Enrol in a Samba class. Get weight lifting. There is an activity out there for you that will get you hooked. You just have to be brave enough to find it.
